Millennials have grown up with devices, they are comfortable with them, and they demand that they deliver in lightning speed. This new rapid demand and rapid delivery, many say, is the major cause of the human attention span decreasing by 4 seconds since 2000 – to an average of 8 seconds. Millennials, the ones mostly responsible for the growing need of a mobile learning market, are expected to constitute half of the global workforce by 2020, according to a Price Waterhouse Coopers report. This generation makes up for our technology natives, comfortable with any device, application or digital innovation and very much at home in the world of social media and instant messaging. According to global researcher Ambient Insight, the mobile learning market is predicted to reach $12.2 billion in 2017, which is a staggering annual growth rate of 18.2% for the period 2012 to 2017.

Why Did Grovo secure a registered trademark on MicroLearning?
“Our trademark on MicroLearning is a way to create a dialogue in the market around the definition of ‘MicroLearning,’ and to elevate Grovo’s expert-led, science-backed MicroLearning methodology designed to impact employee engagement and performance from the generic, chopped-up content whose mission is making money, rather than making people great at their jobs".

In case you've been under a rock the last year, MicroLearning is THE new buzzword for training.
However, here's the thing. MicroLearning is NOT a new term. It's just new to the buzzword vernacular. MicroLearning has been around for as long as people have been creating work aids to put toner in copy machines. Therein lies a key misunderstanding, that MicroLearning is some newfangled learning process. One that requires us to belly up to the technology bar and order up the new and sparkly methodology of the moment.
Microlearning being new, is not accurate nor is it accurate to state that technology must be incorporated.

MicroLearing: Delivering Bite Sized Knowledge
MicroLearning is a hot topic in talent development; however, while many agree that MicroLearning is delivered in bite-sized chunks, further details vary.
To bring some clarity to this topic, the Association for Talent Development (ATD) surveyed 596 talent development professionals, finding that 38 percent currently use MicroLearning and another 41 percent plan to start within the next year. The majority (92 percent) of those whose organizations currently use MicroLearning indicated that they believed their use of MicroLearning would increase in the future.

Microlearning in JD's HYPE CYCLE.
This is the current HYPE MONSTER on the graph. MicroLearning is everywhere. Everyone wants it! No one really knows why! I expect this concept to fall quickly into the through of disillusionment as the year moves on. Like gamification, we need the noise to fade before the majority of organizations recognize the real value in designing learning that fits.
