The idea of learning that occurs in small bursts is not new. MicroTeaching, the predecessor of MicroLearning, was invented in the 60s by Dwight W Allen at Stanford as a tool for professional development of educators. In this formalized setting, MicroTeaching was a short, timed session of teaching material with a predetermined objective to a small group for the purpose of eliciting feedback to improve teaching skills (Allen, 1968).

In 2005, Austrian academic Theo Hug approached the idea from the learner’s perspective. Hug has done the most work on advancing the concept of MicroLearning and is generally credited with its resurfacing in its modern, informal iteration with multi-media component.
